Singapura: The Musical opened with much fanfare at the newly refurbished Capitol Theatre, and its producers had big dreams for it. The $2.72 million production, 4th Wall Theatre Company Singapore boasted, could perhaps make it all the way to Broadway.

Yet less than a month after the show’s run was extended, the production was wound up.

When asked, eventClique – Singapura’s ticketing agent – told The Online Citizen that the run had been cut short, but could not make any comment beyond that.

The Straits Times reported an anonymous Singaporean member of the crew saying that his contract had been delayed and that he had not been paid. Similarly, TOC has also heard of Singaporean employees of the production having contractual problems. Some local cast members had apparently pulled out of the production before it opened due to issues related to their contracts.

The production has received less-than-enthusiastic reviews, with local reviewers saying that it was “overly simplistic”, “unfocused” and even “cringeworthy”.

TOC has reached out to The 4th Wall Theatre Company via email for comment. The telephone number and address listed on their website turned out to be the phone number and office address for eventCliQue.

Public relations company SPRG responded to TOC’s email with a short statement from Singapura‘s management, thanking people for their “incredible support and encouragement throughout the course of the musical’s run.”

“At this juncture, we are not able to discuss further details due to confidentiality reasons,” the statement added. “We do want to assure everyone that Singapura: The Musical will honour all contracted agreements.”
