Respect for Sabahan mountain guides
Mhd Rizuan Kauhinin, a Sabahan mountain guide, made social media headlines when he braved falling rocks and rough terrain to carry a Singaporean student to safety following the Mt Kinabalu earthquake last weekend.
An image of the boy on his back went viral after photographs of the guides at work in the rescue effort were shared online.
Mr Rizuan hopes to meet the boy he rescued. “If there is a chance, I’d like to meet him again, as I can’t bear to see him like this,” said the 25-year-old, who had been busy with the search-and-rescue operations.
“I don’t remember what he looks like, as there was blood on his face.”
Some of the guides have also lost their lives during the earthquake, but according to Mr Rizuan, the surviving ones also the face the grim prospect of losing their livelihood.
Malaysia’s The Star interviewed Mr Rizuan following his heroic effort – which the guide quietly brushed aside as insignificant. Watch it below.
