A 34-year-old Singaporean man was shot dead by police and two others were arrested in an incident near the Shangri-La Hotel where the 14th Asia Security Summit was taking place.

The 3 men were travelling in a Singapore-registered red Subaru Impreza when they were stopped at a police vehicular checkpoint set up along Ardmore Park.

It is said that the 34-year-old driver suddenly accelerated the vehicle towards Anderson Road when the police asked to inspect the car boot.

The police added that the driver continued to crash through police barricades despite warning issued by the police, endangering the lives of the officers.

“Police opened fire at the vehicle to stop further danger. The vehicle subsequently stopped at the junction of Orange Grove Road and Anderson Road,” wrote the police statement.

Two men, aged 26 and 31 who were passengers in the vehicle, have since been arrested. The 31-year-old man sustained injuries during the incident and was conveyed to hospital conscious. Substances believed to be controlled drugs and an item believed to be a drug-taking utensil were found on the men arrested.

The driver of the Singapore-registered red Subaru Impreza, a 34-year-old man, was pronounced dead at scene.

Police and officers from Singapore Armed Forces’ (SAF) Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Explosives Defence Group (CBRE DG) have searched the vehicle involved in the incident at the vicinity of Shangri-La Hotel. No explosives, arms or weapons were found in the vehicle..

The police statement wrote that the driver and one of the passengers are wanted by the authorities for various offences. All three subjects are Singaporeans and no weapons were found on the three subjects.

The police said that its preliminary investigations indicate that this is an isolated incident and further investigations are ongoing.

Security measures, including vehicle and person check points, is said to have been put in place in the vicinity of the Shangri-La Hotel because of the on-going Shangri-La Dialogue. The three-day security summit, which closes today, was attended by defence chiefs from 26 nations, security analysts, academics and media from around the world.
