Amos Yee, the 16-year old whose video diatribe against the late Lee Kuan Yew went viral in just a matter of hours after it was released online, has been slapped with several charges on Tuesday.

According to local news reports, Mr Yee, who was unrepresented in court, is being charged with:

  • Allegedly causing matter to be seen and heard by five victims by creating a video clip containing remarks against Christianity with the deliberate intention of wounding the feelings of Christians.
  • Allegely transmitting electronically an image showing obscene figures, believed to be a cartoon or caricature of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Mr Lee in an unflattering sexual depiction.
  • Allegedly making an insulting video clip online containing remarks about Mr Lee which was intended to be heard and seen by persons likely to be distressed by the same.

Mr Yee’s video had received more than 600,000 views before it was removed.

His actions have been condemned by some, with a reported 21 police reports being made against the teen.

The Straits Times had reported that Mr Yee’s video was “seen and heard by five victims” but the newspaper did not elaborate who these “five victims” were. In its later edited report, the Straits Times removed the mention of these reported “five victims”.

However, others have also come out to defend Mr Yee, with even a petition being set up asking for the authorities to release Mr Yee, who was arrested on Sunday evening.

In court with his son yesterday was Mr Yee’s father who later expressed his apology to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Mr Lee’s father is Lee Kuan Yew who passed away on 23 March.

Mr Yee is currently out on $20,000 bail and he is believed to intend to fight the charges.
