In 22 December 1984, two opposition politicians JB Jeyaretnam and Chiam See Tong, each secured an elected seat in Parliament, the first time that opposition parties won in a general election since Singapore’s independence.
JB Jeyaretnam had earlier won a seat at Anson during the 1981 by-election after PAP MP C. V. Devan Nair was appointed the third President of Singapore on 23 October 1981.
