City Harvest Church leaders still not in the clear
The Court has rejected the bid by the City Harvest Church (CHC) leaders which contended that prosecutors had not done enough to make a case against them. Judge See Kee Oon ruled that the charges of criminal breach of trust and falsification of accounts came with sufficient evidence. This means that the CHC’s leaders have to mount a defence if they wish to be acquitted.
 
Gambling exclusion orders reach beyond casinos
The gambling exclusion orders that were effected in response to the introduction of casinos in Singapore will be extended to 12 selected non-casino gambling venues, such as Singapore Pools and the Singapore Turf Club, as well as recreational clubslike NTUC Club and SAFRA National Service Association. This was meant to address concerns among the public about the disparity in social safeguards between casinos and non-casinos venues.
 
Industry leaders to join productivity movement
The National Productivity and Continuing Education Council (NPCEC), a government-led group working with industry to raise productivity, now has on board 12 industry leaders to help with its efforts. NPCEC focuses on the development of sector- and economy-wide platforms to raise productivity. It is not clear how the 12 leaders, which include key appointment holders from Wing Tai Retail and Citi Development Ltd, will help with the efforts, but Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who also chairs NPCEC, said, “We must develop the broader ecosystem to support actions by firms to transform whole industries. Critically, we need to enhance workplace culture by strengthening management quality and engaging employees better.”
 
Temasek Cares with free N95 masks
Temasek Cares, the philanthropic arm of Temasek Holdings, will be giving out free N95 masks to all households in a bid to get Singaporeans better prepared for emergencies such as a flu pandemic or severe haze. The community programme will see about 1.2 million households receive the masks in the mail as part of a “Stay Prepared” starter from today to 12 May.
 
Singapore best place for moms in Asia

Save the Children, a non-governmental organisation that promotes children’s rights, has declared Singapore the best place in Asia to be a mother for the second year running. The report noted that the lifetime risk of maternal mortality has been cut by 80%, child mortality dropped by 25%, gross national income per capita doubled and the percentage of women in Parliament increased six-fold over the past 15 years, although it was not clear how these indices affected the rankings.
 
Second NMP to seek second term
Nominated Member of Parliament R. Dhinakaran will be seeking a second term in Parliament, the second to indicate that he will be doing so following fellow NMP Eugene Tan. Mr Dhinakaran is the managing director of lifestyle and fashion retailer Jay Gee Melwani Group, and he hopes to voice out the interests of SMEs who are labouring under the restructuring efforts.
