IDA: StarHub can’t charge for 4G
The Infocomm Development Authority has stopped StarHub from charging for 4G services, following the telco’s announcement last week that it intends to charge customers for value-added 4G services. IDA also indicated that customers of other telcos should not have to pay extra for the remainder of their existing contracts. IDA will also draw up new regulatory requirements to place the onus on telcos to ensure customers are fully aware of key conditions in their contracts, before they sign up for the services.
 

S$63m to get 100 nuclear experts in Singapore
The National Research Foundation plans to spend S$63 million to fund a new programme that will train more scientists and engineers in the field of nuclear technology. This would likely produce 100 experts in the field in the next decade. The training will cover three broad areas, namely radiochemistry, radiobiology and risk assessment.
 
COE premiums down
Premiums for Certificates of Entitlement have dropped in the April round of bidding, with the exception of those for motorcycles. The biggest decrease was in the premiums for commercial vehicles, which dropped from S$32,890 to S$16,613.
 
Singapore pole vaulter rants on Facebook
National pole vaulter Rachel Yang has taken to Facebook to express her unhappiness at being dropped from the competition in Busan, South Korea, next month after being told that she was the best in Singapore to enter. The Singapore Athletic Association has clarified that the incident was caused by a misunderstanding over changes to the minimum criteria for the sport.
 
High demand causes Hello Kitty site to go offline
McDonald’s Singapore had to suspend online sales for its latest set of Hello Kitty dolls, following overwhelming demand from fans barely one and a half hours after the launch. Irate fans took to the company’s Facebook page to complain. McDonald’s Singapore said that it would suspend news orders at different times to ensure that the website continues working smoothly for customers, caused by large numbers of customers logging in at the same time.
