Earlier this year, it was announced there are going to be two separate musicals on former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
It has now appeared that one of the plays will be staged by a Philippine theatre group, called the 4th Wall Theatre Company, established in 2007.
The play, titled “Singapura: The Musical” will be held at the Capitol Theatre when it opens next year.
It will be among the first performances since the theatre’s last movie screening almost 17 years in 1998.
The musical will tell the story of the lives and the struggles of Singaporeans, as well as that of Lee Kuan Yew, during the uncertain times of Singapore’s pre-Independence.
Joel Trinidad will be the writer and lyricist, and Ed Gatchalian will be the composer for the musical. Having produced and performed two original musicals to date, 4th Wall Theatre describes itself as “a theatre group that encourages the creation and production of original, world-class musicals and plays that will appeal to a wider local theatre audience.”
After its Singapore debut, the musical will travel to London’s West End and Broadway in New York.
There will be a private and invitation-only preview of the songs, held later this month, featuring a number of songs from the musical.
When The Online Citizen asked for more information about the funding for the musical and the kind of research it has done for it, or the people it has spoken to about Singapore’s history, the company said media queries will be addressed at its press conference which it will hold eventually.
The second musical, which will also be staged next year as part of Singapore’s 50th anniversary celebrations, will have composer Dick Lee as the lyricist, novelist Meira Chand and theatre practitioner Tony Petito, founder of the Singapore Repertory Theatre who will work on the storyline and script.
