Chinese national Feng Jia Cheng, 23, has been sentenced to eight weeks in jail for assaulting a taxi driver in October 2012.
Feng, a club singer holding a work pass then, had placed his friend who was intoxicated into the taxi which was stationed at the driveway of Holiday Inn Atrium at Outram Road.
The taxi driver, 55-year old Tay Chwee Kok, was however worried that Feng’s friend might cause a mess in his taxi and asked Feng to take his friend out of the cab. This evidently angered Feng who punched Mr Tay several times. The commotion attracted hotel staff and others who then tried to separate the two men.
Feng, however, lunged at Mr Tay again and pushed him to the ground. Mr Tay sustained a broken wrist and bruises on his head.
In court, Feng’s lawyer said his client had “over-reacted” and has shown remorse. Feng has also paid a sum of S$6,000 to Mr Tay for medical fees and loss of income because of the injuries Mr Tay had sustained.
In his judgement on Wednesday, District Judge Mathew Joseph said that workers in the public transport sector should be protected by the law.
He concurred with the prosecution that a custodial sentence was needed, and sentenced Feng to eight weeks.
The Chinese national could have been jailed up to seven years and fined or caned.
In a separate case, Australia expat Aaron Jeremiejczyk is under investigation for allegedly assaulting a female jazz singer last week. [See story here: Australian expat being investigated for alleged punching incident.]
