January

  • AIM Saga – PAP explains why the tender of data management for all the town councils was awarded to PAP owned company.
  • Punggol By Election brought about by the resignation of PAP MP and parliament speaker, Micheal Palmer over his extramarital affair. The Nomination Day was held on 16 January 2013, while Polling Day was on 26 January 2013. Four candidates from four different parties contested the seat and Lee Lilian from Workers’ Party won with 54.5% of the total votes cast.
  • Population White Paper – Singapore government announced plans to boost the city population up to seven million boosted by young immigrants in its Population White Paper and later endorsed the population White Paper by 77 votes to 13.

February

  • Protest of the Population White Paper held by Transitioning.org on Feb 16 attracted a crowd of more than 4,000.
  • Death of American engineer, Shane Todd and the court inquires

April

  • Constitutional challenge of statute 377A by Gary Lim and Kenneth Chee.
  • City Harvest Saga.
  • Malaysia Elections and the deportations of Malaysians who protest illegally.
  • Story of Palau Ubin’s eviction notice to residents.
  • Charge of Leslie Chew – Singapore police arrested Mr Leslie Chew, 37, the person behind the cartoon strip, Demon-cratic Singapore, on Friday morning, for alleged sedition.

May

  • Denial of tenure for Cherdian George.
  • MDA licensing of news site.

June

  • Free My Internet protest at Hong Lim park.
  • Haze that gave Singapore the highest PSI index ever with people frantically trying to buy facemasks.
  • Hailstones in West area of Singapore.
  • Pink dot with 12,000 participants.
  •  In the week of 16 – 22 June 2013, there was a record of 842 dengue cases in Singapore in a single week.
  • Trial free transportation of MRT from 7am to 9am at selected train stations. The trial period starts from 24 June 2013 to 23 June 2014.

July

  • Dirty ceiling saga at hawker centre at Bedok involving Town council, Workers’ Party and NEA.
  • Police officer charged with the double murder in Kovan.

August

  • National Day Theme song, “Woo oh Woo oh”.
  • Edwin Yeo Seow Hiong, A senior officer from the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau was charged in court for misappropriating S$1.7 million from the anti-graft agency between 2008 and 2012.

September

  • Case of Dinesh Raman’s death in prison and denial of his coroner’s report.

October

  • Justice Quentin Loh released a judgment in the Constitutional challenge of statute 377A of the Singapore Penal Code, upholding the law which makes intimacy between men an arrestable offence.
  • Ms Han Hui Hui sought a declaration that the CPE “being a government body with corporate status does not have a right to sue for defamation or threaten to sue for defamation under common law.” The case did not continue as Ms Han accepted the CPE’s settlement offer on 8 October.
  • Cedar Girls Sec School’s track gets marked to be torn down for future developments.
  • Singapore’s Bukit Brown Cemetery placed on the 2014 World Monuments Watch.
  • Debate over women to serve National Service.

November

  • Hijab issue in Singapore’s civil service and other uniform donning professions.
  • Messiah’s video warning to Singapore and the “Hackings” of websites in Singapore.
  • Book launch of “The 1963 Operation Coldstore”.
  • Healthcare forum with various opposition parties organized by TOC.
  • Yong Vui Kong gets sentenced to life and caning in place of death penalty after four years of appeal.

  • Singapore’s film, Ilo Ilo wins big at the Golden Horse Awards with four out of six nominations.
  • Alex Au Wai Pang faces possible contempt of court action for writing and posting articles that the Attorney General’s Chambers said “scandalize” the country’s judiciary.

December

  •  Trade ministers from the 12 countries of the Trans Pacific Partnership met at Dec. 7 to 9 in Singapore to iron out the terms in the agreement and hope to come to a conclusion this end of the year.
  • Breakfast Network closes down after finding the MDA’s forms onerous to comply to while another news site, The Independent SG registers with MDA.
  • Riot in Little India over fatal accident of Indian national.
