Press Release from Checkpoint Theatre
The staging of Faith Ng’s latest play and the Checkpoint Theatre Associate Artists scheme marks Checkpoint Theatre’s continued commitment to nurturing Singapore’s new generation of talented playwrights and theatre-makers.
Our Associate Artist scheme recognises and builds on the existing relationship between these young artists and Checkpoint Theatre. It signifies Checkpoint Theatre’s continuing commitment to provide a platform for their artistic growth, and acknowledges the collaborations and mentorship that Checkpoint Theatre has extended to the artist in the past. Our inaugural circle of Checkpoint Theatre Associate Artists are: Laremy Lee, Lucas Ho, Faith Ng, Joel Tan and Shiv Tandan. (Laremy and Lucas are also Associate Producers of Checkpoint Theatre.)
The writing of Associate Artist Faith Ng’s latest play, For Better or For Worse ̧ was supported and mentored by Checkpoint Theatre and our Joint Artistic Directors, Huzir Sulaiman and Claire Wong. Checkpoint Theatre is delighted to celebrate the official launch of its Associate Artist scheme with the staging of For Better or For Worse, a new Singapore play by the writer who was nominated for Best Original Script in the Life! Theatre Awards for her debut play, wo(men) which was staged by Checkpoint Theatre in 2010 and published in Checkpoint Theatre’s 2012 book publication, Voices Clear and True: New Singapore Plays Volume 1.
For Better or For Worse traces the love-hate marriage of middle-aged couple Gerald and Swen. Set against the backdrop of everyday life in modern Singapore, the play is poignant and provocative at every turn. For Better or For Worse makes you laugh, even as it tears apart notions of romantic love while compelling you to embrace the tedium and wonder, and the joys and pains, of marriage. What is this thing called love? Will “I do” lead to a dead end or a glorious future? What does it take to keep a marriage going? Join Gerald and Swen as they realise they are hopelessly yet passionately bound by their marriage vows: to depend on each other no matter what, till death do they part.
For Better or For Worse is acclaimed playwright Faith Ng’s newest full length play, following the success of her debut play wo(men) which garnered her a Best Original Script nomination at the Life! Theatre Awards. In For Better or For Worse, Faith again captures a slice of Singaporean life in her inimitable style that is both crafted yet raw and authentic. She has created utterly believable and thoroughly Singaporean characters who are complex, compelling and colourful.
Directed by Claire Wong (who recently directed Occupation and The Weight of Silk on Skin, and co-directed Dream Country: A Lost Monologue) and starring Jean Ng and Julius Foo, For Better or For Worse is a powerful and moving account of the ups and downs of love and marriage, and of staying together through the uncertainties of life.
Checkpoint Theatre supports new Singapore playwriting and proudly mentored Faith Ng’s writing of For Better or For Worse.
