The Singapore media is more trusted by Singaporeans than the US media is by the Americans, said Singapore’s Home Affairs Minister and Law Minister K Shanmugam, speaking at Columbia University.
He was taking issue with the fact that Singapore is ranked 136th out of 178 countries in the 2010 Press Freedom Index by Reporters without Borders.
Gallup polls in 2005 and 2006 showed 69 per cent of the Singaporeans trusted the local media compared with only 32 per cent of Americans, he said.
But he didn’t tell the full story.
The winner of that poll was Rwanda.
Eighty-six per cent of the Rwandans said they trusted the local media.
In the 2010 Press Freedom Index, Rwanda ranked 169th – lower than Singapore.
