Anyone noticed the grey shirt that Prime Minister Lee wore at his National Day Rally? Last year he wore pink. Last night, he wore grey.

Could it be because of the state of the economy? When the economy was doing well – “a golden era”, as MM Lee called it – the PM wore pink, and in more than one occasion in the past year or so. Now that the economy is not doing so well, he wears a more erm, appropriate colour.

Perhaps the thinking behind it is that it is no good to look too cheery or cheerful when Singaporeans are experiencing the highest inflation in 26 years. Alos, the stage is more bare now – without the potted plants.

A subtle message that the PM empathises with the general feeling of the people?
