On Burma (Myanmar)

Dr Lily Neo: To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether the recent reaction by ASEAN members on the Myanmar issue heralds the beginning of the end of the policy of non-interference long treasured by ASEAN member countries and how will this change the ASEAN dynamics.

Mr Siew Kum Hong: To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs (a) whether Singapore has supplied arms and weapons to Myanmar; (b) what is the total value of investments by Government-linked companies in Myanmar; (c) what is the total value of remittances from Myanmar into Singapore over the past 5 years; and (d) whether the Government intends to take any action, either by itself or as ASEAN chair, in addition to making statements and writing letters to the junta.

Ms Sylvia Lim: To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether and to what extent Singapore businesses are or have been engaged with the Myanmar authorities in trade and consulting in the field of military hardware and surveillance equipment.

Ms Sylvia Lim: To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether and to what extent there are arrangements in place for military cooperation between Singapore and Myanmar.

On protests against Burma in Singapore

Ms Eunice Elizabeth Olsen: To ask the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs (a) whether the Ministry deployed its officers to film students organising on-campus activities highlighting the plight of the people in Myanmar; and (b) whether such activities constitute a security threat.

Mr Siew Kum Hong: To ask the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs whether the police had asked persons wearing T-shirts protesting against the Myanmar regime to take them off and, if so, what was the rationale for doing so.

On public transport

Dr Lim Wee Kiak: To ask the Minister for Transport (a) including the current transport fare revision, how much has the public transport fare increased over the last five years; (b) on which socio-economic group relative to real wage increase over the last five years does this increase have the greatest impact; and (c) what is the Ministry doing to mitigate the impact.

On public housing

Dr Lim Wee Kiak: To ask the Minister for National Development (a) how much have new HDB flat prices increased over the last five years; (b) whether the current construction boom will result in further escalation of new HDB flat prices; and (c) whether the Ministry is reviewing the $8,000 household income limit for the purchase of new HDB flats.

On retirement

Mdm Ho Geok Choo: To ask the Minister for Manpower (a) what plans does the Government have in terms of other measures to establish a secure retirement other than changes made to the CPF scheme; (b) whether the Government has considered the taking up of annuity insurance to be taken up at the commencement of work just like the CPF; and (c) if he can provide updates on modifications, if any, to be made to the proposed annuity scheme.

On beggars and tissue paper sellers

Er Lee Bee Wah: To ask the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports in light of the rising numbers of beggars and tissue paper peddlers in Orchard Road, what efforts have been taken to curb their activities.

On upgrading of flats

Mr Chiam See Tong: To ask the Minister for National Development why were the flats at Blocks 213 to 224 of Lorong 8 Toa Payoh not selected for the Home Improvement Programme if the age of the buildings is the main criterion.

Questions for oral answer

Ms Sylvia Lim: To ask the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs if he will provide a breakdown of the numbers and percentages of the total population in the years 1990, 2000 and 2006 classified as (a) Singapore citizens; (b) Permanent Residents; and (c) Non-Resident Foreigners.

Ms Sylvia Lim: To ask the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs for the years 2005, 2006 and the first half of 2007, in respect of incidents of voluntarily causing hurt (a) what is the number of reports or calls for police assistance regarding such incidents received by the police; (b) what is the proportion of domestic to non-domestic incidents; and (c) what is the number and percentage of cases in which the police voluntarily initiated prosecution of the suspect and the reasons for police initiation of such prosecutions.

Dr Fatimah Lateef: To ask the Minister for Transport whether the ERP scheme has met the objectives that it was meant to achieve and if it has improved the traffic flow on our expressways especially during peak hours.
