Secretary-general for the Singaporeans First Party (SFP), Tan Jee Say has been appointed as a Harvard Fellow by Harvard University.
Mr Tan will be traveling to Harvard University later this month to take up the Fellowship and will be based at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. The WCFIA was co-founded in 1958 by Robert Bowie and Henry Kissinger. Dr Kissinger later went on to become the US Secretary of State.
Mr Tan will be interacting with the university’s diverse community of scholars and practitioners of international affairs – politicians, diplomats, military officers, journalists, representatives of NGOs, and business professionals. His principal focus is on globalisation and employment security.
This is the second university fellowship for Mr Tan. Last year in May, he was appointed Visiting Fellow by Oxford University where he researched on welfare states at the Department of Social Policy and Intervention. The following month, he was a guest speaker at the international conference “Shifting to post-crisis welfare states in Europe” held in Berlin.  It was the largest gathering of international scholars on the subject of welfare states.
In March 2013, Jee Say delivered a special lecture in Peking University on “Population, Economic Growth and Quality of Life” in which he discussed the challenges of immigration and cross-border flow of labour, a subject that he will research further during his Harvard Fellowship.
When asked about his comments of being appointed as a Havard Fellow, Mr Tan said, “I feel honoured to be appointed Harvard Fellow. It gives me the opportunity to tap on some of the finest brains in international affairs in general and on globalisation and its impact on employment security in particular. This issue is of great interest to us in Singapore and I hope to benefit from the robust discussions in Harvard and bring back useful ideas for us in Singapore.”
