Taiwan’s high court has sentenced Taiwanese socialite Jusine Lee to 79 years and seven months in jail for a series of rapes, and for illegally taping and making sex tapes of 20 women without their consent.
The punishment is the harshest the courts there have handed down for such crimes in recent years.
Lee, the son of former Yuanta Financial Holding board member Lee Yue-chang, was charged and found guilty of a guilty verdict on six charges of aggravated forcible rape, 12 charges of forcible rape, 10 charges of intercourse with an unconscious person, and 17 charges of invasion of privacy.
Lee, however, will serve only 30 years because that is the limit in Taiwan for prison sentences.
He has also been ordered to pay his victims NT$27.45 million (S$1.15m).
His victims included models and starlets.
Lee, 29, has been detained since he was arrested in August 2012, after being on the run for 23 days after the case exploded in the media in Taiwan.
Lee started the rapes in 2009 where he would stake out luxury nightclubs for potential victims before drugging, sexually assaulting, and then filming them.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), “Lee brought home 14 women, either drunk or unconscious, from nightclubs and other places. Then he sexually assaulted them, taping the acts without their consent.
“He also took home another six women and secretly filmed them having sex with him. Police found the explicit video files on his computer and cellphone, and placed him on the wanted list when he refused to cooperate with the investigation.”
“Lee was initially accused of date-raping 34 women, some of whom were models and starlets, starting from the year 2009. All 34 claimed they were victims of Lee, but the high court said there was not enough evidence in the 14 other cases, the court said.
“Lee’s lawyer said the socialite’s parents found the ruling unacceptable and would file an appeal before the Supreme Court.”
The high court’s ruling came as a shock to Lee’s family as it dwarfed the Taipei district court’s decision last September to hand him an 18-year, six-month term.
