SM Goh compares S’pore’s flood to Japan’s tsunami

March 13
07:50 2011

“How many of you followed the latest tragic events in Japan with the tsunami…and then put into context our floods in Singapore against that kind of disaster.

“I am not saying we shouldn’t do anything about the flood. But the amount of noise you made with just sporadic flood compared to the Japanese. I saw them on TV. Very stoic looking. You don’t see them crying. This has happened, just get on, that’s the kind of spirit you want to have and you call it nation building.”

SM Goh Chok Tong, Channel Newsasia, 12 March 2011

  • doctorwho

wonder if today will get more floods b’cos raining for long time this morning and woody insensitive cocktail talk.

  • worldcrass

    this is world-class analogy.

  • agongkia

In order to compare, one must know the difference between an act of god, natural disaster and negligent, incompetency or short sighted of human being.

  • MUTT

Is he calling for earthquakes to come to Singapore?

  • http://hongjun.blogspot.com hongjun

    He is getting old.

  • ifedAHMENGpeanutsw

    ello senile minister..
    are you torkin cork?
you want to compare the Act of God versus the act of pap ministers?
nobody can tell Heavens when to cry or throw tantrum..butt pap ministers can ensured that orchard road shouldn’t be floodin if the ministers did his job well before grantin the green lights to build more profitable shoppin complexs..
you can piled all you 1s..you can diggged so cheap all you can..

if u remain silent, ppl won’t say u r dumb.

  • muDhead

Is he calling for earthquakes and tsunami to come to Singapore?

  • Sad

Am ashamed to have leaders of such mentalities. But Sinkies are proud of it. No wonder we are considered stupid by certain country.

  • 3mil$

fancy being paid 3mil$ to make such comparisons. Don’t forget forecoming pay rise possibly to 4mil$.

  • eaglefly

don’t worry, miw eill ENABLED themselves to your central bank’s gold bars when the tunami or earthquake strikes, and they’ll tell you they are doing a good job to save keep them, FOR YOUR SAKE !!!

what else did you not do, beside VOTING in CHUCKOO ministers ???

  • eaglefly

Making things even more illogical, the president’s job has nothing to do with the economy, and the explanation doesn’t even pretend that he does. His salary rises because ministers’ salaries rise according to a certain formula (pegged to GDP growth as aforesaid). It’s all got to do with face; it’s got nothing to do wi…

    ======

no, you’re wrong, it has nothing to do with face….

    HOW ABOUT GREED !!!

  • singporean

you all voted for him what, so you complain for what?

  • Nick Yeo

Why doesn’t he compare his salary to Japan cabinet minister’s salary.

Why doesn’t he compare size of SG to Japan?

Why doesn’t he compare the numbers of FTs in SG to Japan?

    Joke!

  • Sawdust

Do not expect brain dead patients to speak with coherent. Do ourselves a favor let us all put these PAPatients out of misery and our misery too!

  • Clement

Dearest SM Goh, Please don’t use other people’s misery to justify your own pleasures!

  • Cover ass

The flooding incidents in Singapore must be so embarassing for the PAP, that they take every opportunity to find excuses for their incompetencies. This shows how insecure PAP is. Anyway, it is either he is so stupid to compare the Japan tsunami to Singapore flooding or he thinks most Singaporeans are stupid enough to believe his crap.

  • Alamak

Yes be resilient and let in more foreigners and we be strangers in our country!

  • Sadman

Mr Goh is the KING of TALKING-COCK MAN.

  • Weirdo

oh my gosh, if Mr Goh Chok Tong shuts his trap, nobody knows he’s stupid. This is so embarrassing!

Comparing a 8.9 magnitude unavoidable natural disaster to a competely avoidable flood in singapore.

My God can u beleive this SM Guy!

one Grain of rice is the measure of a sack of Rice!

can u beleive tha amount of Dumb F*@ks running this country.

  • http://gangasudhan.com/blog Ganga

How many of the PAP ministers followed the events happening around the world and then put into context their salaries against that kind of responsibility and hard work.

  • Bey

    OMG!!!!!How much singapore pay him?

  • Ong t h

Not good to compare Japanese with us. The Jap minister, if had not committed harakiri, would have apologized if MAS Selamat escape had taken place in Japan !!

  • Alex

Why not compare Singapore ministers salary against those of Japan and then look at the amount of responsiblities they have to hold and do with a fraction of SG minister’s pay?? Wanna compare?? Ya lets compare… A story can be comcluded in many beginning and ending by looking at different angles

  • mice is nice

well, our annual “sporadic” floods can affect the bottomline of businesses. just ask how much buildings spend on flood prevention devises.

how come no one make noise about such measures pushing business costs up? or did those flood barriers cost only $1?

    lol…

  • Anderson

What is worst. There is deep investigation and openness in Japan to find the cause of natural disaster and report there is in their media to the public.

In contrast, what we have is ShittyTimes and shitty govt’s own Media giving half-lies and nonsense. There is no serious investigation going in orchard’s flood only scapegoat and nonsense to move on the case. Common sense will tell you one good reason the flood happen is because of large underground shopping complex will have disrupted flow of water, but yet you have our govt who afraid loss of face if this common sense is discussed in the media, and so censor this possibility in media ? A govt who approve of such project because it will make the govt people rich at the expense of lesser mortals !!!!

Those expensive idiots should stop comparing Japan with Singapore because it will expose more stupidness and ridicule of this PAP party.

  • nith

What a STUPID and INSENSITIVE senior minister we have here.

    STUPID, because:
Just because you didn’t see any Japanese folk crying, doesn’t mean that nobody cried, IDIOT. All it means is that the cameraman were sensitive enough to not film people while they are grieving. Do you really think NOBODY cried and just went on with life? Your failure to understand human nature is shocking.

    INSENSITIVE, because:
Basic decency tells us that after a natural disaster happens, the appropriate thing to do is to express our sympathy and offer any aid they require. You do NOT use this incident as an opportunity to chide your citizens for having the wrong attitude towards life.

Geez. SM Goh, the more you open your mouth, the lower my impression of you plunges.

  • aggef

Arguably the stupidest thing SM Goh has said in a while.

Dumb ministers like Goh and Vivian always give me an ego boost whenever they make idiotic comments like this. I think to myself, hey, if that idiot can earn millions, then surely someone like me can!

  • chomper

What is that strange thing around his neck?

I want to pull it tighter and strangle him.

  • chomper

Oops, just kiddding Mr Goh. Don’t sue me like the Abdul Malik guy who wanted to “burn” Vivian, okay?

Come to think of it, if anyone here needs to grow more stoic, it’s definitely our ministers who can’t even handle a simple comment online.

  • Hoosiers

Never really had a high regard for him cos all he said are laughable stuff and lately with lots of arrogance. Hope to vote marine parade grc this election..

  • Dee

LKY explains his high pay for his role as a part-time forecaster. GCK has proven to us his high pay as a part-time ‘highsighter’. One forecast wrongly and one gave highsights that not only insults the citizens but rubs salt into the misery of those outside Singapore. The Japanese should be offended that GCK made the comment that no one is crying there. It’s downright insulting to insinuate that the Japanese are cold-blooded and emotionless.

  • Dee

    @ chomper

Haha, don’t worry, we all understand how much you love Singapore to have the impulse to put an end to further embarrassment to us all :)
    ]
Maybe we should all strangle ourselves instead for having GCK once as our Prime Minister. It only reflects on how dumb we are.

  • Chanel

    SM Goh,

What happened in Japan was a natural disaster. S’pore’s flooding was man made, i.e. Lack of proper planning!!!

  • sneil

Yes. I heard that the Japanese have this practice of committing suicide after massive failure in order to redeem their honour. So, let’s listen to Goh’s call to be more like the Japanese and strangle ourselves out of shame from voting Goh in.

  • chanel

    SM Goh,

Tsunami is a NATURAL disaster, but S’pore’s floodings are man-made…..i.e. due to lacl of properly planning by PAP govt.

  • cha tau

A stoic is one who is indifferent to or unaffected by joy, grief, pleasure or pain. Is GCT’s comparison a complementary or insult?

  • sgcynic

To put things in context and matters in perspective, here we have the one of the world’s highest paid armchair critic (annual salary of more than S$3m) who is totally clueless on how to engender a sense of belonging among his citizens, putting people down and brushing aside their concerns. Over in Japan, politicians who are paid a tenth of his salary have to manage a great natural disaster. Talk about shamelessness and greed – that’s the context. Nothing but contempt for the goat.

  • http://Website(optional) Ah Goh

“Amount of noise” we made? Who does he think he is to lecture citizens like that? Just because he’s the SENIOR minister, it does not mean he should be cocky towards citizens.

Also, did he meant that we don’t have the rights to kao pei kao bu about the floods? And, we citizens weren’t making noise about the floods in Singapore since its due to nature and it is beyond our control. What citizens are unhappy were PAP’s inefficiency in handling the problem.

  • Quittor

    @ Nick Yeo,

    You are spot on.

Exactly people should asked him on the spot how much Japanese cabinet minister got and how it compares to his wages for being a “back bencher”

And how much is Japan’s GDP compare to Singapore’s

People who are past their use by date should just retire gracefully lest making such ludicrous remarks on a daily basis.

oh, i bet his salary is going up another 25% at the least in no time.

  • NYK

Can someone please inform Mr. Goh to view this footage please?

    http://cnn.com/video/?/video/world/2011/03/12/nhk.nat.kamaishi.cnn

  • nay1

If wanna compare, then GCT & his team of amateur circus clowns should then all RESIGN, since in Japan and most other countries with accountability, credibility and innate shame toward mistakes made, politicians bow out gracefully with apologies and humility, and they dun even earn a drop fraction of what our lowest IQ Millister earns.

As usual, these daylight robbers ONLY blab & yak non stop to drown their own conscience. They know their ends are near but since the money is so good, die die must stay even if earthquake and Tsunami sweep them out of office. Shameless hard truth.

  • Dumbo

What you know, we should be proud to be paying for the world most expensive politicians & clowns.

  • Dead Poet

God, can anyone comprehend this bozo. Do you see how well the government is handling it in Japan. If we have such a natural disaster happening here, you highly paid goons will shit your pants, You cannot handle a limping terrorist, cannot control floods after 45 years of planning and building. You cannot handle the declining income of the people. All you can do is pay yourself well and you dare to criticise the people. To hide behind the GDP as your only KPI is a freaking smart ass thing to do. Give the people a chance to write KPIs for yourself and Ministers and lets see if you perform. Till then shut the f -up

  • WatTheCrap

Paid millions can’t deal wif peanut floods. Wan to compare flood and tsunami. Stop complaining and get a better feel on the ground.

Rather a cheap shot to take a dig using others crisis. Reflect more on helping those affected by the crisis instead

  • concerned parent

the arrogance of this man is unbelievable! anything to justify their mistakes and incompetence…not one word of sorry. this is indeed a cheapshot. what is his salary?

  • whjho

Strange that why didn’t GCK compare the flood with Thai’s tsunami at the point of incident but to Japan.

Was it because he thinks Spore are at Japan’s living standard and efficient. By using Japan, he infer that given that circumstances surrounding Japan, Sporeans ought to ‘forgive’ the govt and the Minister incharge for having the flood.

But he forgets that by the same comparison of efficiency and living standard, the Japanese’s PM and Ministers don’t earn as much as the Spore’s team. So can we infer that Spore entire cabinet is less capable; measuring the size of GDP, population and geographical differences?

  • spirit of saddam

of course Spore’s flood is nothing compared to Japan’s Tsunami !
But sadly, our govt leaders’ “sense of honour and shame” is also nothing in comparison.

therein lies one key reason why Japan is a nation.

without a doubt, no exaggeration to say that Goh CT and company will not last a day as leaders in Japan…heck! even the Yakuza members will despise them.

ps: now i begin to understand why the infamous $600K peanuts woman prefers to be on Durai’s dessert menu…after the chillicrabs.

  • We want Change

Not suprise at all about his moronic comment!

If the GARMENT can justify their salaries in running an ISLAND as if they are running a CONTINENT and their creditable effort in handling the terrorism security failure in the likes of how the United States handled 9-11, what can suprise me more??

Always remember.. they are the alpha males and females of our society and please take pity of their “peanut” salaries in comparision with Bill Gate, Warren Buffett, Li Ka-shing etc..

Man.. We are talking about a group of OVER WORKED, UNDER PAID everyday people here.. Have a Heart..

    “That’s a fact of life.”

should we not make more noise to make better improvments? if we don’t make noise, nothing will be done, after all we have a elite team in the government that suppose to make our life better. we cannot be like Japan we do not have so many people to lose and should not wait till castrophe strike us before we make noise.

  • Dumbo

We also make alot of noises regarding his multi-million $ pay and bonuses.

How come he did not ask himself to compare to that of the Japanese ministers. Fcuk him.

We have two SMs. One GCT a dreaming SM then J a sleeping SM then our MM a fortune telling one. What a waste of taxpayers’ money to pay these three idiots.

  • Eastman01

SM GCT should stop talking nonsense and wake up. The fact that there is no Earthquake in Singapore has NOTHING to do with GCT or PAP. But the floods are indeed caused by the poor management of the high paying PUB Officers who did not do a thorough job – clearing canals, raising roads level etc.

  • Singaporean

Only two things to say to GCT. Screw and you.

  • Different

    Goh Chok Tong!!!!

Japan Tsunami and their government swift into action is indeed the kind of spirit PAP should learn. This is what we called nation building. Stop blaming the people when your government paled in comparison to the new japanese leader.

Don’t give us the crap that everytime when there is flood, you brushed it off as 50 years freaky event and than told us no amount of engineers can help it. So live with it? I am sure no Japanese govt would be so bold and arrogant as PAP. Yes!! we need nation building but not from PAP. A new govt is what Singaporeans are looking forward in this coming election.

  • really stupid move

lol. yeah i agree, when something happen they go MIA for a few days trying to gather words to bombard singaporeans and push the blame on us that we are daft and stupid and crying babies. unlike japan straight up the media and government and people work in hand. i saw alot of them crying and running for help. here in singapore you see police handcuff an innocent camera man and guarding the flood and they stood there watch the drama instead and finding for culprit who enters the pool of flood instead of helping them out of the flood.

  • million dollar ministers/presidents

why did sm goh did not compare his salary to japan ministers? japan is way bigger then singapore. singapore is just a tiny red dot. but the amount of salary our ministers and president getting is way too much for the tiny red job they have been doing or maybe. so stop comparing and look down right in your pocket before you dig on others matter

  • sickening

what logic is it ? singapore soon will cover by sea water because of such useless leader!

  • al

Yes, don’t just compare for comparison sake. Singaporeans must be able to read and listen beyond what these elite ministers of Singapore say. Compare your salary, why don’t you draw a parallel too? And our dear President is getting a hefty $890,000 increment in salary! When things go wrong in Japan, their lower-paid ministers bow and resign. When things go wrong in Singapore, the buck comes back to us and the ministers not only do not resign, they get increment and get promoted! Need we compare more? Just shut-up as we need no more confirmation that you are a bunch of money-grabbing, incompetent “leaders”. Fancy drawing a comparison and making use of Japan’s current dire plight to get back at Singaporeans. Pui!!!

  • Fugazi

The tsunami is a reality and an accidental quirk of nature. However, what is not accidental is this – an unregenerate opportunist latching onto such an incident to score political points. The fiction is of being a leader; the reality: a shameless opportunistic wolf.

So much for integrity, so much for ethics, so much for being labeled a leader. A blight on the nation and the soul.

  • Kelvin

Yesterday I was watching the video clip on GCT comparing our flood with japan’s Tsunami. I just feel fed up.

The flood and tsunami are two totally different issues. We can say that no amount of engineering work can prevent the tsunami in japan or any parts of the world.

But we can prevent flooding in Singapore, especially in low laying areas. Or at least reduce the impact of flooding here.

We are making a fuss about the flooding here because the PAP boosts and talk big about how good is the civil service system they create for spore and the high salary.

If want to get super high salary, then better stop talking cock and start showing care for singaporean.. PAP!

  • Crap

SM Goh is making use of a very sad natural disaster in Japan to further his politicsl poistion in S’pore. Disgusting!!!

  • singapore

what crap you are crapping GO CHOP TONGUE? Are you as senile as the hard truth? DO you want the same increase as the fat ass doing nothing? Don’t us by taliking rubblish and want to get away with bonuses and increment again. idiot.

  • RED-man

    Dear Mr. Goh

While the Japanese ministers get lesser pay than your ministers, they came out with the budget to build a extensive flood control system that had prevented more get killed instead like you and your MM who sit at home and shake leg blaming it as a freak incident and saying no amount of engineering can prevent that. please ask your PAP ministers to read into the below link:

    http://pcgladiator.blogspot.com/2009/03/tokyos-flood-control-system.html

You think Singaporean is a fool? Or are you trying to clown yourself out of this election. Do some thinking before you speak!

I urge TOC to write a article on the japanese flood control system and compare it to our stupid PAP implementation to prevent flood.

What a turn off for voters.

    >>I saw them on TV. Very stoic looking. You don’t see them crying.

He must be watching/reading too much MediaCorpse News/State Times…

  • le chat noir

I personally feel that Mr Goh is making an unjust comment about the atitude of Singaporeans towards flooding issue at Orchard.

Japanese remained calm during the earthquake as they were prepared, trained and have excellent mitigation measures when encountering earthquakes. However, Singaporeans have never faced floods at Orchard prior to the indundation. Hence, we were appalled by the flooding at Orchard. Furthermore, at that point of time, there wasn’t any mitigation measure to counter the inundation. Thus, comparing Singapore’s flood with Japanese earthquake is simply unjust.

How are we going to make Singaporeans as calm as Japanese when facing calamity? I suggest that the government come up with measures and solutions. In this way, Singaporeans will be relatively prepared when calamity strikes, instead of being overly-anxious.

I believe that it is rather impossible for Singaporeans to adapt the attitude of Japanese immediately for “nation building”. Singaporeans can’t simply adopts a new national identity in a short spam of time. How are Singaporeans going to remain calm when they are feeling insecure (as Singapore is unprepared for catastrophic events)? I strongly think that the attitude of the Japanese derives from the preparedness and the trust in their government towards mitigating the effects of calamities.

I think the main issue is that Singapore government should learn from Japan in laying out measures and prepare citizens for such calamities. I am rather dissapointed by this mindless comment of Mr Goh

  • Woodywoodpecker

    Dear Chok Tong

I am sure your underlings are reading this and I hope thy have the ba**s to report it to you.

    STOP TALKING COCK YOU MONKEY!!!!!

  • sfloong

Yea, you clown SM, you don’t see the Japanese PM crying salary not enough and go ahead to give themselves top private sector pay.

The Japanese government just get on to work for the people, that’s the kind of spirit you want to have in the government and you call it nation building.

    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Anyone has the link to youtube showing GCT’s comments?

  • A&E

SM Goh represents a group of leaders who have not had to handle calamity of this magnitude. Such an analogy is incredibly odious.

World leaders of greater calibre are paid much less to deal with much more. The Japanese are even now grappling with possible nuclear contamination, oil fires, devastation to homes and people numbering in excess of 10,000.

You and yours cannot even deal with rain-induced flooding, throwing up your hands within days to proclaim the task impossible.

Your lack of perspective in trotting out this little nugget of selective comparison is utterly disgusting.

  • sickening

What we should learn from the Japanese is to resist importing ft to avoid diluting the homogenous society which they took many years to build. Look how united and loyal the Japanese are to their country. It is this cohesion that help them overcome all odds. This is something totally lagging in sg.

  • Chilling Crabs

Does GCT represents the government view?

When the MP of Tanjong Pagar introduce his “successor” to the people of Radin Mas – he told them: “This is your new “Tao Kay

  • theforgottongeneration

This remark by SM GCT only shows several things:

    1) his constant disdain for Singaporeans. Obviously he has a deep grudge against us voicing out against his paymaster’s incompetency in handling ‘engineer-able’ issues like urban flooding.

    2) his need to earn his keep. Why talk about nation-building if he had not done so during his terms in office. What a big $3++m sour grape.

    3) How much are our ministers paid to handle flooding? To detain ONE terrorist in prison? How much other leaders are paying themselves to handle natural disasters like tsuinami & earthquakes? This shows how sheltered our tiny Red Dot ministers really are, regardless of the high esteem they hold of themselves.

    4) He has actually contributed to Singaporeans having a stoic outlook to life/nation building – whenever ERP goes up, ministers pay increase, no accountability for public policies, etc. – I see Singaporeans with a stoic expression on their faces.

  • mice is nice

if Orchard Road flood is that sporadic, why not wait a few more years to observe the flood patterns before pumping millions hastily to raise the roads levels?

S’pore govt should just tick the mall owners off for over-reacting. a few handbags floating in the flood waters only wad, wad is there to cry about? be thankful no life was lost!

The comment just shows how uneducated and lacking in intellect Mr Goh and our government ministers are.

If I were Mr Goh I would simply collect my pay, sit in a corner and keep my mouth firmly shut.

  • http://- -E-

omg. what was he thinking? How can this be compared? Japan has been facing natural calamities for centuries! They are PREPARED for such things.

They don’t have their government telling them everything is fine and working well and when things happen, tell the citizen’s they weren’t prepared. When things happen, they FIND OUT WHY and work towards PREVENTING it from happening again. That’s the kind of responsibility that’ll move people.

To compare us with Japan is simply ridiculous.

  • From Japan

Dear SM, Tsunami is not flood! If they could be compared, I would compare you with Mr Mubarak.

  • Exramask

    To SM Goh,

How many of your cabinet ministers (and yourself) follow the global salary standards of cabinet ministers, and the amount of work and accountability that are placed upon them?

I’m not saying that we shouldn’t pay you guys any less than you deserve (actually, we don’t pay you; you decide how much you get, but I digress). I saw these leaders on TV, taking the lead, taking account for their actions and accepting the consequences. I don’t see them crying, complaining that they are underpaid and asking for yet another pay raise.

Unlike you and your current team – nowhere to be found or heard when situations happen, pushing the blame to citizens when blame can’t be found, and quick to claim all credit when none is deserved. What little you have done (if at all), it is beyond any comprehension that your team still can find it in themselves to approve yet another pay raise to their massively bloated salary as it is. How can you sleep at night, when there are thousands of people whom you are paid to serve are running under?

But I agree with you that we should move on. Singapore needs to move on and get right back on track, without you and your current team of good-for-nothings.

    Now, please go(h) away.

Based on the above, how to compare?
    We are nothing like them.
Just shut the fk up and eat your peanuts (from your wife and durai).

GCT said Singaporeans not calm? For heaven sake, when Singapore get flooded (for decades), workers still have to go to work and get wet feet. Can he feels how uncomfortable it was to take bus and walk a distance on flooded land to the office. Oh, I forgot, he has a chaffeur ferrying him anywere he wanted to go right at the door step of his aircon rooms. How convenient for him. No wonder, he blamed the flood on trees, leaves and the people other than himself. He care less anyway – for a price he paid himself manifold higher than the Japanese govt.

  • Alan Wong

It seems our PAP leaders are going from bad to worse, senile LKY, cocky GCT plus the useless LHL. All drawing obscene pay and yet wants to talk cock.

How come he never say a single word whether he is drawing too obscene a salary ? There’s nothing noble in what they do anymore. Everything is down to S$ and cents.

There is no more respect for our PAP leaders, President included. A bunch of idiots only interested for the money.

  • Poor Citizens

Lao Goh, ah Lao Goh, what are you trying to imply?

Poor citizens cow beh and cow bu is not because of the flood, but because the papies leaders conveniently missing in action and not taking responsibility.

Please look at how the Japanese leadership responding to the crisis. Where were you when the flooding occurs?

  • sturmtruppen

Mrs Peanuts’s Husband SM Goh is wrong to use this comparison in his context with the ongoing disaster that has happen to japan and is still happening now…as the Japanese gov’t go about finding the missing and rescuing their trapped citizens.

SM Goh using those words has shown all and sundry the kind of “human being” he is….on the surface he looks human…but under it…

I don’t think i can face my Japanese friends eye to eye…and neither able to tell future japanese friends i am a singaporean and have a thoughtless government minister using the pain / suffering of others to score cheap political points.

    What a sicko!

  • Silent

Sa for SM Goh to take advantage of a disaster to thumb down Singaporeans! Look at the TV – Foreigners are packing up and leaving Japan, the Japs are stayin put to help themselves. If it were to happen to Singapore, guess what the FT, PRs etc will be doing?

  • ram

So SM Goh, are you telling us to put up with your screwed ups while you continue to draw your multi-million dollar salary?

  • swoon

Is CGT retarded or senile? Singapore floods = incompetence + $mil civil servants. Japan tsunami = act of God.

  • Fugazi

The earthquake cum tsunami is a reality and an accidental quirk of nature beyond any control of anything or anyone.

However, what is not accidental is this – an unregenerate shameless opportunist latching onto such an incident to score political points. The fiction is that he purports to be a leader; the reality is that he is using the pulpit to and being an opportunistic wolf.

Is it not revealing what this person is all about? Circumstances, situations always reveals the real person. That it creats a person is obsolete and a myth.

It is really unfortnate that one has to endure such pablum from the likes of this self-serving so-called senior minister. A woeful sobriquet: Self-serving Minister.

  • popcorn

Why bother to have SM in Singapore. They are duo yu Ministers, sucking up money resources. They have nothing better to do than to pass remarks, and stepping on our dignity. To pass the time, please go fly a kite, and shut the big gap up.

  • Cold blooded Goh

    Senile Goh said :
“I am not saying we shouldn’t do anything about the flood. But the amount of noise you made with just sporadic flood compared to the Japanese. I saw them on TV. Very stoic looking. You don’t see them crying. This has happened, just get on, that’s the kind of spirit you want to have and you call it nation building.”
    ====================================================
Did you say, ” You don’t see them crying “. I suggest you log on to CNN and watch.

We hope you will and with God’ grace, let you experience your loved
ones died in an unnatural death and see whether you have any tears.

  • Black Day

2nd explosion happened in Japan….really sad.

In such times, it is really insensitive to bring up our man-induced flood to compare to the tsunami. I am ashamed to have SM like this.

  • Vote of Opposition

    Lao Goh’s Flood Speech……

  • LIONS ROAR

    singapore=floods only
    japan = tsunami

    singapore ministers = multi-million pay

japanese pm = peanuts salary +no
    MM or SM

YOU SEE,SINGAPORE IS BIGGER THAN JAPAN,both interms of size and economy???

funny, gct getting paid to talk talk only.

where is the ‘more good years’ or ‘every singaporean counts’?

    tlak is cheap;cheaper then FTs.

  • nay1

Singapore has had tsunamis all along.
    All so daft.Yes indeed.
Tsunamis of legalized corruption right here on Animal Farm.

  • TGH

Pls compare the minister’s pay here and those in Japan.

In Singapore, we don’t have natural disasters like earthquake for our government to deal with. We only have floods.

And yet, our ministers’ pay are many times that of the Japanese.

    Mr Goh, what say you?

  • http://wonderpeace77.blogspot.com georgia tong

SM is going the way of MM, both getting more and more senile.

  • Please get Japanese politicians for Singapore then!

Like to share this e-mail which i received:

The Japanese events are a double natural calamities (earthquake and tsunami) in which there is no human involvement. The heavy rains in Singapore is equally a natural phenomenon though it is not a calamity by any measure. Singaporeans did not blame PAP for heavy downpour. What is wrong with Senior Minister Goh?

Singaporeans’ backlash at PAP was about the floods which were not due to the heavy rains per se but the catastrophic incompetency of PAP agencies to keep the preventive systems functioning orderly.

Senior Minister Goh has totally crossed the line in criticizing Singaporeans. It is clear that he is more interested to defend the mistakes of his government than to listen to the voices of Singaporeans. More importantly it is very insensitive of Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong to compare Singaporeans to Japanese and claim we must be like Japanese.

If he will like us to be like Japanese people, then PAP should be like Japanese politicians.

    1. When Mas Selamat, the most dangerous terrorist in Singapore escaped state detention, Wong Kang Seng should have resigned.

    2. When the worst food poisoning at Geylang Serai Market occurred killing 2 Singaporeans and when it became clear it was due to rat infestation and NEA not tackling such issues from beginning, Yaacob Ibrahim should have resigned.

    3. When the above floods occurred due to PUB failing in its preventive system, Yaacob Ibrahim should have again resigned.

    4. When YOG ran into so many failures, Vivian Balakrishnan should have resigned.

    5. When today Singapore get stuck in a housing cirsis thanks to Mah Bow Tan failing to keep his housing policy in tune with immigration policy, he should be resigning.

    6. When Lee Kuan Yew makes such racist comments about Malays, he should have
resigned. When he lost an alarming undisclosed amount of money in GIC, he should have resigned as chairman of GIC. When he lost enormous money in Suzhou, he should have resigned then.

    7. When today our transportation faces total setbacks in efficiency thanks to Raymond
Lim’s transport policy being not consistent to immigration policy, he should be resigning.

    8. When Ho Ching lost $50billion, she should have resigned.

    9. When Goh Chok Tong’s privatisation programs of the 1990s led to government agencies becoming government owned companies, which led to escalation of prices till today and public companies becoming monopolies, today Goh Chok Tong himself deserve to resign

If anyone who should need to emulate the Japanese, it is the PAP. If anyone who should stop whining, it should also be the PAP.

  • RED-man

Well said Moulmein Kallang resident. Can’t agree more. The gang of so-called cleaner than white people that legalized corruption!

  • Die-hard Singaporean

For Goh Chok Tong to say that the Japanese are just getting on with it is beyond belief. For him to think that the Japanese people are not in shock, traumatised, distraught, weeping and grieving is beyond comprehension.

Sadly, as this is Singapore, the SM’s views are very likely also the Government’s views as nobody puts forward any views without the old man’s say so.

There are likely to be 10,000 dead. Thousands of people have had their homes, lives and livelihood completely and utterly destroyed.

A good part of Japan is in ruins.

Nuclear meltdowns are a possibility. There are more after-schocks coming.People are short of food and water.

There are simply no words in the English or any other language to adequately describe the shameful and disgraceful comments made by the SM.

It is only in Singapore that a politician who is paid over $3 million a year with a recent bonus of over $2 million who talks nonsense and gets away with it. Elsewhere in the developed the person would have been publicly ridiculed and the Government would have at the very least had to issue an apology.

In Japan it would have been hara-kiri or seppuku.

  • mice is nice

maybe S’poreans should show the clip of GCT making the comparison to the Japanese PRs, FTs & FWs feel.

  • mice is nice

i mean … to see how the Japanese PRs, FTs & FWs feel…

    sorry for the typo.

  • Mediacorp has apologised

Mediacorp has apologised for an email its Marketing Communications sent shortly after Japan was hit by a massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake, canvassing for advertisements on Channel NewsAsia.
The email was lambasted by Netizens and labelled as “insensitive” and heartless” with many calling on Mediacorp to apologise and the person responsible taken to task.

  • popcorn

Yes, all the MM and the SMs are too old and getting senile, and cost too much of our money to occupy the seats, and having too much time on their hands, thus resort to talking trash just to while away their time, and to justify their obscene pay and have to talk something.
SM Goh has attained his Swiss standard of living long ago. When is our turn, when is our children’s turn.
Stop talking cock now, no ba kay already.

  • ChangeTheWorld

Thank you SM Goh for discrediting yourself and your team with your speech, well done. It’s the greatest favour you have done for the opposition parties (with your speech).

We are waiting to see what you goona say after spending millions of taxpayers’ money to raise the road and the flood still persists. Well done.

  • augustine

with high pay , everyday i have high sprit

  • actung

You can praise Japs or FTs but don’t ever discredit local citizens for shits

  • ganeshsk

    Mr Goh

Singaporeans did move on after the Orchard Road floods just like the Japanese, granted they made a little noise. But The Japanese government never declared that there will be no tsunamis unlike our government once declared Orchard Road will never get flooded. So why do you decri Singaporeans from making noise before they moved on. But Mr Goh it is the government who did not move but were in denial brushing it off by making noise that it is a freak incident and no amount engineers can fix the problem. But when it happened again the government decided to move on,

Now that Orchard Road is elevated, will the government have the guts to declare that Orchard Road will never get flooded.
But I assure you Sir, I am sure my fellow Singaporeans will adopt the Japanese stoic behaviour if Orchard road floods again.

  • ineedtoFLYaA380ambulance

    dear peanut senile minister…
if you want to compare the tsunami disaster..would you be kind enough to see how many TRUEBLOOD singapoorium visitors are still STUCKED in tokyo narita aeroport…why are they still there? havn’t finished buyin duty free sake perhaps?
your very owned hardworkin citizens just 1-2-hav a decent holidays and got stucked by mother natures…
ere you are..singin songs more louder than the titanics…
so where is your searched and rescue contingent plan? ok maybe this cheap peasants are xpendable…

  • CPL (NS) chou ah beng

Maybe during the next Total Defence Day, that talk cock minister would praise the Japanese for committing Sook Ching!!

Never the expect the better from Pathethic Arrogant Party.

  • HeTalksRubbish

Another superficial comment by our leader again: He has failed to relate to the source of flood in two different context: Our orchard flood is caused by BLOCKED drain, due to the failure of the department who is supposed to check and clear drains,a MAN-MADE disaster while the Japan tsumami is a natural phenomenon.
We are amazed that a SM can make such a superficial comment.
Also, as to why the Japanese are stoic? Its because they have Social Cohesion, in the face of disaster, they face difficulties as One People One Heart and One Nation.
Singapore will never be like the Japanese, because it is you SM Goh and your party who brought in a FLOOD of Foreigners, how can there be social cohesion? How can we be stoic. Its is only wise ‘To Each His Own’ to survive here in singapore, we are taught to think this way by your party.

  • Boh Nau

The actual fact that the japanese are calm because in a castatrophe as big as this time, every victim is in a state of shock, too shock that they are still in a daze to react. This applies not only in japan. And everybody got the wrong view. And who has remained calm after finding their loved ones, dead or alive?
If japan did, then they are zombies, not human. so, what happened in japan is normal reaction every country every nation would have behaved in hard times. so now the flood or whatever, instead of getting the persons responsible to answer for it, they asked the tax-payers to calm down when no one is screaming.
don’t be so irresponsible, as ministers, when there is problem, look into the problem and stop being so defensive. and any minister who could not perform should automatically step down so that the competent ones can take over and do a good job for the people.don’t cling on to your appointment because the pay is good. cling only if you are capable at serving.
