Thio Li Ann’s response

July 11
23:27 2009

I think certain Americans have to realise the fact that there are a diversity of views on the subject and it is not a settled matter; there is no universal norm and it is nothing short of moral imperialism to suggest there is.

Thio Li Ann, responding to the controversy over her remarks on homosexuality

  • openminded

She’s right. There is no conclusive evidence that homosexuality is genetically based. One should be open to the possibility that it is a developmental problem.

  • smallvice585

There is also no conclusive evidence that heterosexuality is natural too.

One should be open to the possibility that heterosexuality is a pandemic.

  • sgcynic

I like the term “moral imperialism”. Coming from the horse’s mouth.

This is SUCH a GP paragraph…the kind of nonsense writing/speaking style only the JC system can produce:

”We can be united in commitment to this principle, without slavishly bowing to a demanded uniformity or dogma of political correctness set by elite diktat. I cannot say I am impressed by this ugly brand of politicking which I hope is not endemic.”

And one can definitely say she doesn’t practice what she preaches by reading any of her anti-gay rants in Parliament.

How to unschool what one has been schooled in? Sometimes I fear for the real competitiveness of our average Singaporean in the fields of liberal arts abroad.

  • burgerking

    4) I agree.
NMPs like Thio Li-ann are next to useless. christianity and homosexuality aside, her political portfolio is essentially vacuous. she is a prime example of an NMP who put his religion and family ties before the interests of the nation. can anyone recall Augustine Tan (PAP) of Whampoa?
from the list of newly appointed NMPs, I am hope Joscelin Yeo would do a better job of resonating the voices of common people like me on bread-and-butter issues than pretentious former NMPs like Thio Li-Ann, and not forgetting that lazy bum Jessie Phua.

She is okay lah. Americas wants diversity of views. Yes?No ? She is only one of many more. What is the gay community inNY afraid of? Proud that one of us is in NY to talk about human rights. How many in Singapore has this standing??

  • CelluloidReality

    Socrates,

Therein lies the difference between NY and ourselves, they are comfortable with the diversity of thought, and those who are unhappy, are able to make their views known robustly but fairly.

Where do we go from here? Should we sit back and let narrow-mindedness driven by conservatives who try and dictate our morals, or should we let liberalism form the superstructure in which diversity and tolerance of differences can be made to exist, so that conservative and liberal views can remain as important to their respective audiences, under the auspice of a fair hearing?

The choice is clear if we want to move up and not go back down..

Thio Li Ann got it right. When CFO of Pepsicola spoke about the five fingers in graduation ceremony, the middle finger reserved for America, she spoke the truth; the truth hurts. What Thio Li Ann said is similar to what CFO said. America cannot eat humble pie but will keep acting like big brother whereever they go. They need to understand difference in other cultures and not go around bashing and loud-mouth about China example.

#mightymouse – numbers say nothing. Those who perserve what is generally good for society deserves support, those who garner for age-old known decandent way will be pushed back. One wrong papers and society will be weaken – what are you cheering about?

Is America on the path of self-destruction?Yes?No?

In that case, will we allow someone with a different point of view come here and lecture at NUS? What are we afraid of?

what difference does it make if homosexuality is natural or not? is it “natural” for us to drive in fancy cars or fly in aeroplanes? Is it “natural” for people to be as obsessed as our former NMP is by what other people do in their private time?

  • score point

I itch to add on to #14 jon.
I like to ask, who determined what is Natural?
Or simpler, who determines or can determine for all, what is UnNatural?
What if Gays determine what is Natural or what ARE natural?
What if BI’s determine what ARE natural?

who is great enough to dictate for the whole world?

The point is that if one became homosexual due to certain growing up or developmental issues, then one needs to look at homosexuality differently. This is still a possibility as there is no evidence that homosexuality is programmed into one’s biological make-up. One should still be open to such a possibility and not consider it to be a settled matter.

  • Black & White

The issue on homosexuality has never been proven conclusively. Even if one is born with a certain orientation, does it make it natural? Can we consider a man who like to dress up as a female as normal? What about those who lurk in the shower rooms of our public swimming pools gawking at others when they are changing? Or those “queers” who are always busy fine-adjusting their crowning glory or forever washing their hands in our public toilets in major shopping malls – in the hope of finding a sex mate in a toilet!? Is anal sex normal – even for heterosexuals? All of us ought to know the function of the anus! And it has nothing to do with sex! But given the human “ingenuity”, some of us can now claim a second function of the anus and call anal sex natural and normal! Or better still, because this is the 21st century, we should consider all things as natural and normal!

  • sloo

**Even if one is born with a certain orientation, does it make it natural?

I don’t understand why is it that heterosexuals always highlight the negative sexual acts of homosexuals to justify that it is ‘not normal’ In the realm of heterosexual sex, there are plenty of instances (molest, photographing up women’s skirts, rape, incest etc) which are also considered immoral in society. Does that mean heterosexual is unnatural too?

And regardless of whether one considers heterosexuals enjoying anal sex normal or not, the fact that there is no law against this shows that the govt will not judge on private behavior between consenting adults in the privacy of your rooms. If this is applicable to straights, then why not gays?

**but given the human “ingenuity”, some of us can now claim a second function of the anus and call anal sex natural and normal!

And yes there are more diverse sex acts these days as compared to many decades ago (S&M etc) and as long as this acts are done in private between consenting adults, why should it bother you? After all its their anuses, not you issue of problem at stake here.

You may not agree but unfortunately the world is moving forward and as much clamor there are for the gold old morales of the good old days, there’s no turning back. What we and govt can do is to ensure the line between the pubic and private spheres remain distinct. And that applies to one’s own moral code and religion. Once this line i crossed, then I would call it an unwelcome invasion of privacy that is totally uncalled for and unjustifiable in a secular society

” i think certain Americans have to realise the fact that there are a diversty of views on the subject and its not a settled matter:…”

why is there a need to “settle the matter”?

    an ego trip?

Ms. Thio represents the worst of what Singapore has to offer. She also claims to have been spoken to by God, and her mother is a leading Singapore Christian. Her speech before the Singapore Parliament was like the rant of a spoiled child. Arrogance and Singapore seem to go together. Hopefully, Singapore will be brought back to reality by the economic downturn, and it’s unemployed and unhappy foreign laborers.

There are things we do not want any diversity of views on because those views simply retard civilisation.

In a civilised society, who in their right mind would want to waste time entertaining a “diversity of views” on women’s rights? Women deserve no less than equal rights to men. End of story.

Similarly, no sane decent person who entertain a “diversity of views” on whether persons of less or more coloured skin should be rightly accorded more or less equality. EVERYONE regardless of skin colour deserves to be treated equally.

Human rights for all humans is the decent thing for civilised peoples to champion. We don’t need to see definitive proof that women do actually exists and are actually human and “natural” before we feel that it is right to accord them equal rights do we? Only those without the ability to empathise, those without conscience or compassion, can believe otherwise.

There is nothing to “settle” or proof. All humans deserve equal rights to access the best possible lives. Everything else is bigoted and hate-retarded bullshit.
